Local Produce for Our Connecticut Family

In 1985, Dennis Kovacs purchased a small health food store in Hamden, CT. For the next eleven years, the store became known for specializing in locally grown produce. With the support and guidance of friends who had been in the produce business for upwards of sixty years, he got to know numerous farmers located in Hamden, North Haven, Northford, Cheshire, Wallingford, and Meriden. Featuring local Connecticut products has always been the cornerstone to his business.

Due to pressure from the landlord, Dennis was forced to relinquish his location in Hamden in 1996. At this time, Dennis had four children in school and therefore needed to relocate quickly. In search of a new location, he stumbled upon an empty storefront in North Haven; he called the landlord and made a deal. In just a month’s time, Labor Day Weekend, with the help of friends and family, the store in North Haven opened its doors. It was a surprise and honor to be greeted by all of the loyal customers from the old store. Over the next twenty years, Dennis and his family of employees built a considerable reputation for fresh produce whilst supporting local farmers and vendors. During that time, Connecticut Fresh Food and Produce renovated its look by adding a deli and garden center allowing for the customers to have a more comprehensive shopping experience.

Throughout the time in North Haven, the building had grown old and worn. While much effort, energy, and money was put into it, Connecticut Fresh Food and Produce realized it was no longer a viable location. In 2015, a businessman from Wallingford approached Connecticut Fresh Food and Produce with an enticing offer on a new location which couldn’t be refused. The current location opened a year later in April of 2016.

After thirty-four years of hard work and dedication, the vision that Dennis had finally come to life. A local market that provides a way to connect the community to its local farmers and vendors while offering only the freshest fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses and more.
